if you're using the suggested build environment (http://www.koanlogic.com/klone/tut.html 
) you should set KLONE_CONF_ARGS in the top-level Makefile:

---[ Makefile ]---
...

KLONE_CONF_ARGS = --enable_debug --enable_libu_debug
